SEPTEMBER UPDATE
CURRICULUM
· MATH:
o We are currently studying:
· READING:
o TP: Readers learn how to do Reading Workshop to become a community of readers.
· SCIENCE:
o Starting with Ch. 8
· SOCIAL STUDIES:
· WRITING:
o Personal Narrative Writing
o Writers can generate ideas for personal narratives by thinking of:
§ An important person
§ A special place
§ A strong emotion
§ The 1st time they did something
§ The last time they did something
§ A time they realized something
o Students are expected to write the ENTIRE TIME during Writing Workshop

CURRICULUM
· MATH:
o We are currently studying:
- Unit 1: Adding and Subtracting Fractions/Mixed Numbers
- We have been exploring and reviewing equivalent fractions using fraction bar models and number lines.
· READING:
o TP: Readers learn how to do Reading Workshop to become a community of readers.
- As a class, we are building up our stamina for reading. Our goal is to be able to read for 40 minutes without stopping.
· SCIENCE:
o Starting with Ch. 8
· SOCIAL STUDIES:
· WRITING:
o Personal Narrative Writing
- Narrative Rubric PDF
- Have students look at the rubric and select one area to focus on (Example: Lead, dialogue, sensory details, slowing down the heart of the story, etc.) The 5th grade common core writing standards are challenging! It will take time and practice to improve, but EVERYONE can improve their writing by putting in the time and effort. (Even teachers!) ;)
